Frequently Asked Questions How does our child become familiar with his/her new school upon accepting a space at The Apple Orchard School? Families are welcome to come to our Scholarship Fair in early May and we host a new child picnic at the end of May. New families will receive home visits from their child's teacher in early September, prior to the start of school. Children start school in smaller groups (½ the class for shorter periods of time the first week). What types of clothing should my child wear to school? Children should come to school in play clothes. We have a great deal of fun exploring things with our hands and often get dirty! Please send children in closed toe shoes/sneakers. Sandals and party shoes are not appropriate on the playground or on adventure walks. My child has allergies, will this be a problem? Our teachers are very aware and knowledgeable in dealing with allergies. We ask that parents fully communicate with the school, so we can optimally manage a child's allergy. What happens in inclement weather/snow days? The Apple Orchard School follows The Brookline Public Schools in regard to school closings for inclement weather. If the Brookline schools have a delayed opening, we open at our regular time. Does my child really need to be toilet trained before school starts? We highly recommend that all children be toilet trained at the start of school. Our program is based on outdoor learning, discovery, and exploration, including adventures all over the farm. It would be difficult for a child who is not trained to fully embrace and enjoy this type of curriculum. Although we expect occasional accidents, children should come to school in underwear, not pull-ups or diapers. |
